Martin Small

Chief Technology Officer

Martin (“Marty”) J. Small is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Spectra Aerospace & Defense. He founded CALCULEX®, Inc., based in Las Cruces, NM in 1986. CALCULEX became part of the Spectra Aerospace & Defense family of companies in 2021.

Marty has spent his 40-year career focused on the development and production of state-of-the-art electronics and software systems primarily for the aerospace & defense industry.

Marty spent five years as a systems engineer at Physical Science Laboratory (PSL) in Las Cruces, NM. PSL is a unique national resource dedicated to strengthening national security. He attained the position of chief of systems technologies at PSL, prior to his leaving to found CALCULEX.

Marty is widely considered to be a knowledgeable, trusted, subject matter expert with a verifiable track record of providing innovative, cost-effective and highly-reliable technology solutions to his customers and end-users over more than three decades. Under Marty’s leadership, CALCULEX engineers invented IRIG Standard 106 Chapter 10 packet formats, co-authored with the U.S. Department of Defense, and selected by the U.S. Air Force as the Telemetry Standard for Digital Flight Data Recording.

A native of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Martin earned three degrees from New Mexico State University: a bachelor of science in computer science, a bachelor of science in mathematics, and a bachelor of science in electrical and computer engineering. Marty is dedicated to the community and is a member of the Las Cruces High Technology Consortium and the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance.
